Thanks to its long history, Drogisterij Boerhaave serves as a captivating window into the reactions to pandemics in Leiden. The medicinal and homeopathic products and memorabilia, namely, are exceedingly more than mere objects. They tell us a fascinating story about the demand from citizens for relief against feared diseases, but the drugstore, its products, and druggists, also give us insight into the historical role of these stores.

Although the manner of advertising has changed, the gaper – as a literal sign – has remained a constant image. Drugstores, thus, give us a vivid image of the way in which people have reacted to pandemics. They show us that drugstores form an essential link between citizens and health, and that they help citizens to survive crises and lockdowns.
